Finn Church Aid’s Agribusiness Feasibility Study

Client: Finn Church Aid and Naisten Pankki

Sector: Poultry (Egg) Production

Study Context: Commercial, Technical, Tax, Legal, Environmental and Financial Feasibility

Key Focus: Alignment of Economic Benefit with Social Impact

Executor: Asigma Advisory

  1. To investigate the feasibility  of starting a large scale poultry (egg) production business in Uganda with focus on the entire value chain and with Rwamwanja Refugee Settlement (and its surroundings) as a priority location to be validated and challenged in the feasibility study, against Central Uganda.
  2. The feasibility study results are meant to be sufficient ground for the development of a more detailed business and investment plan.

  1. Project Inception: Asigma has a database of industry experts across the poultry production value chain. In the project inception phase, we engaged and onboarded industry experts  from our database. The expert team were led by a project Technical Consultant.
  2. Questionnaire Formulation: Different questionnaires were formulated  for target stakeholders in the poultry business value chain i.e customers (individual and large customers), sellers (wholesalers, retailers and vendors), poultry feed suppliers & breeders, and industry experts. This stage was done through collaboration between the Asigma team and Technical Consultant.
  3. XML Encoding and Data Collection: Prior to the data collection process, the asigma team encoded all questionnaires in the Asigma data tool. The tool allows real-time collection of geo-tagged data. Data was collected throughout Western and Central Uganda. Additionally, we collected weekly consumption data of large bakeries, bread & pastry shops, large restaurants and large supermarkets. Dataset obtained: 444 consumers, 125 wholesalers & retailers, 66 poultry feed suppliers and breeders and 14 industry experts.
  4. Analysis and documentation: Mapping Uganda’s poultry business value chain, generating the feasibility study report, developing different business cases and recommendation of a viable business case was a combined team effort. The  team consisted of business strategy, financial modelling, industry experts,  and survey data teams.

  1. Full feasibility report discussing all contingent feasibility issues, and that provided a quantitative comparison of Central and Western Uganda via a developed scoring framework.
  2. An interactive excel-VBA based financial model application that allows a user to select a region, i.e Western or Central, and whether the business has a feed mill or no feed mill.
